For real wood, dust weekly with a soft microfibre cloth, wipe spills promptly with a slightly damp cloth then dry, and nourish the finish with a suitable wax or oil every 6-12 months; keep the room at a steady humidity, out of direct heat and strong sunlight, and use felt pads under ornaments to prevent scratches.

MDF is robust but moisture-sensitive so avoid wet cleaning, use mild non-abrasive cleaners, keep edges well sealed, and repair chips quickly; distribute weight evenly, support long spans, and periodically check and tighten fixings.

Veneers should be treated like fine wood but more gently: dust lightly, clean with a barely damp cloth, avoid sanding, and use minimal polish to prevent build-up; protect from heat and water marks, and touch up small chips with colour-matched wax filler.

Laminates are the easiest to live with-wipe with a mild soap solution and dry, avoid scouring pads and harsh solvents, and don’t place hot items directly on the surface; for all materials, keep shelves clear of radiators, rotate heavy books occasionally to prevent sagging, and inspect brackets annually to ensure everything stays secure.
