How To Make Wardrobes Fit In Awkward Spaces At Home

Bespoke wardrobes can help to meet all kinds of desires and requirements in a home. One of these is the use of custom design to make the most of unusual dimensions.

While millions of householders use traditional mass-produced mobile wardrobes, these rectangular box-like structures have their limitations. Because they are made in standard sizes and shapes, they can only be placed in locations that fit their dimensions.

In a standard room with straight lines and lots of space, that may not be such a problem, even if they are not as spacious or as aesthetically pleasing as bespoke fitted wardrobes. But the latter option is certainly better if you have some unusual shapes to contend with.

How Do UK Room Dimensions Vary?

Some common rooms in UK homes are far from symmetrical, or lack a lot of straight lines, as well as having other variations.

  • Among older homes, those built before 1919 have more floor space on average than those built from the 1920s onwards.
  • The standard ceiling height in new builds in the UK is required to be 2.3 metres over at least 75 per cent of the floor space
  •  In London, the standard for new homes is at least 2.5 metres
  • By contrast, many older buildings have higher ceilings, with some Victorian homes having ceilings of up to 3.3 metres
  • One in ten homes has an attic room, which means lots of sloping roofs, odd angles and sometimes walls of differing height.

The ceiling height rules won’t apply in the same way to an attic room, where roofs will almost all slope, and it is also notable that the width will vary in many rooms alongside other features like unusual angles, curves and slightly awkward corners.

Quite simply, while some homes will have an ‘identikit’ look, especially many new builds, others will have a lot of character and idiosyncrasies, either because they are individually designed, have had extensions added, or maybe were built to fit unusually shaped plots.

Other cases may have arisen because two rooms have been made into one by a wall being removed, because the building has been converted from non-residential use, or because it was a self-build project with some very individualistic features.

What Are The Most Unusual Homes In Britain?

Some houses are very unusual in their dimensions. Examples of this listed by London Cult include:

  • A home in Kent made from converted medieval oast houses
  • A glass bunker home in Pembrokeshire
  • A cubist house in Brixton, south London
  • A converted building in Northumberland that has previously been a courthouse and a police station
  • A home in Surrey that was once a railway station building

These are just some of the odd houses that can be seen across the country. Others include Britain’s thinnest house, which is just 1.6 m wide and located in the Shepherd’s Bush area of London, and the smallest, which is located in the Welsh town of Conwy.

If entrusted with the task, we would produce bespoke wardrobes for these homes too. Of course, these are the most exceptional homes in the whole country, but you may find there are still some very unusual ones in your area. You might even live in it.

How Can We Tailor A Wardrobe For Your Home?

Whatever the reason for their unusual dimensions, bespoke fitted wardrobes can be made to suit rooms of any shape.

A key element of that is that their dimensions and composition will be tailored to meet the specific features of the room, while not compromising on style or the quality of materials.

The key point to note is that a bespoke design means there is no need to try to shoehorn as much rectangular wardrobe space of standard design into an unusual space as possible, leaving redundant space around it. This avoids waste and aesthetically displeasing spaces.

Instead, creative solutions can create little nooks and crannies where extra features could be added. This may be storage space, or add some decoration. Indeed, if the room and the building are quirky, where better for some novel extra features to be added?

The key point to note is that whether your home and bedroom have unusual dimensions or not, our bespoke wardrobes are not simply functional things that can be tweaked to reflect a few quirks of shape or size.

Just as importantly, our craftsmanship, quality and, above all, many years of experience enable us to meet all our customers’ expectations, not least when something unusual is required, either as a matter of taste or out of necessity.

If you have a room with unusual dimensions, that will not stop us from finding the solution that fits.
