Turning A Living Room Feature Window Into A Place To Perch & Pause

A client in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire approached DAY & KNIGHT to design a bespoke window seat storage unit around a large feature garden window; creating a calm place to sit, read and enjoy the view, while adding practical concealed storage and display space to improve how the living room works day-to-day.

The request was for a contemporary, full-width, full-height storage and display unit that would surround the window rather than ignore it; incorporating a built-in window seat so he could sit, read and properly enjoy the view, whilst also gaining practical storage and a dedicated spot for books and display pieces. In short: a calming little zone for wellbeing, without sacrificing functionality.

Full-Width, Full-Height Joinery Designed Around The Window

Instead of treating the window as a break in a run of cupboards, DAY & KNIGHT designed the cabinetry to frame it. The result is an XL, wall-to-wall installation that feels architectural: base cupboards for hidden storage, a window seat bench running across the central section beneath the glass, and illuminated display shelving rising at either side.

This layout creates three useful layers in one unified piece:
  • Concealed cupboard space at the base for everyday items
  • A comfortable bench seat positioned to enjoy the garden outlook
  • Open shelving for books and personal objects, with integrated LED lighting

It’s storage that doesn’t just “take things away” but adds character and purpose to the room.

Taupe Flat-Front Doors For A Clean Contemporary Feel

The bespoke window seat storage unit was finished in a gorgeous Taupe, chosen to sit naturally with the home’s calming interior scheme and its beautiful natural wooden flooring. It’s a colour that brings warmth and depth, but still reads as modern.

The client also wanted a clean, uncluttered frontage, so DAY & KNIGHT specified flat doors with push-to-open mechanisms. On a project like this, handles would have interrupted the long lines and made a large unit feel busier than necessary. The handleless approach keeps the design crisp, calm and intentional.

LED Display Shelving: Practical Lighting With Evening Ambience

The side shelving includes subtle LED illumination, giving the unit a different personality once natural light fades. It’s ideal for highlighting books, artwork and treasured pieces without harsh glare, and it brings a gentle sense of depth to the full-height design.

Importantly, this lighting isn’t included as an afterthought. It’s part of how the unit functions: encouraging the client to actually use the shelves, reach for a book, and spend time in the window seat area rather than treating it as purely decorative joinery.

A Second Living Room Feature: A Bespoke Media Wall Unit

Alongside the window-wall installation, the client also commissioned a second, large bespoke media wall unit to house the living room’s entertainment system, including the TV and sound bar. The aim was the same: keep it contemporary and practical, but visually calm.

To complement the first unit whilst still feeling distinct, DAY & KNIGHT selected a contemporary Sage Green finish, again with flat, push-to-open doors. A mix of illuminated shelving and cupboard storage provides space for devices, accessories and general living room items, without letting technology dominate the room.

Warmth and tactility were introduced through beautiful, sustainably sourced oiled Kendall Oak shelving, which ties in naturally with the home’s timber flooring and the overall earth-toned palette.

Installation In High Wycombe By DAY & KNIGHT

Sam and Theo, two of DAY & KNIGHT’s fitted furniture installers, completed the joinery and installation works at the property. With full-height cabinetry and long, clean runs of low-level doors and top-side shelving, precision matters; the finished result sits neatly and confidently within the room, as though it has always belonged there.

The client was genuinely impressed not only by the final look and practicality of both units, but also by Sam and Theo’s punctual, tidy and helpful approach throughout; something that makes a real difference when living through an installation.

“I cannot speak highly enough about DAY & KNIGHT Bespoke Furniture Ltd. Charlie, Maria and all the team are absolutely wonderful. Our bedroom fitter Sam with the help of Theo was highly skilled, tidy, punctual and extremely helpful.”

Beautiful Storage, Display And A Garden-Facing Retreat – The Perfect Result!

This project shows how bespoke fitted living room furniture can do more than just adding cupboards. By building around the feature window and integrating a seat, DAY & KNIGHT created a dedicated place to “slow down” and enjoy the garden view, backed up by ample storage and a true library-style display.

Paired with the matching media wall unit (calm in tone, clever in storage, and finished with natural oak warmth) the living room now feels more organised, more considered, and far more usable every day.
