A Spare Space, Reimagined for Everyday “Home Working” Life
DAY & KNIGHT have recently completed a bespoke modern corner home office furniture installation for a client in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, turning an underused area into a refined, hard-working feature. The client’s goal was to introduce a modern Shaker-style office that didn’t dominate the room. Instead, it needed to function as a comfortable work zone during the day, then feel calm and visually tidy afterwards; making the space genuinely multi-purpose for working, storage and display.
This brief is becoming increasingly common: homes now need to adapt quickly, and a dedicated office isn’t always an option. The solution was to design furniture that supports proper productivity, while also allowing the “office side” of life to be partially hidden when it’s time to switch off.
A Modern Shaker Style That Can Be Tucked Away
A key requirement was a contemporary Shaker look: clean lines, framed door detailing and a quietly confident finish that would sit naturally within the home’s modern interior design. At the same time, the client wanted the working elements to be easy to reduce visually. Paper, peripherals and cables needed homes of their own, so the room could still be enjoyed without feeling like a permanent workstation.
DAY & KNIGHT’s design team focused on three essentials:- A corner layout that maximises available floor area
- Storage that balances display with concealment
- Practical workplace features that improve comfort and organisation
Bespoke L-Shaped Home Office Unit: Corner Desk Meets Fitted Storage
To achieve the brief, DAY & KNIGHT designed a custom L-shaped corner home office unit. One side forms a tall Shaker-style storage and display section, providing a mix of shelving and closed cupboards. This gives the client a place to keep items on show; books, décor pieces, and frequently used folders, while also offering hidden storage to keep the overall view neat.
The other side forms a flexible desk space designed for daily use. The proportions were carefully considered to make the corner feel open, not crowded, while still delivering ample working surface. A built-in pull-out keyboard extension adds an extra layer of convenience: when the keyboard isn’t needed, it slides away to free up the desktop for writing, reading or a laptop setup.
Under the desk, dedicated storage was planned for peripheral tech such as a printer and scanner. By allocating specific spaces for these items, the client can keep equipment close at hand without leaving it on display. This is where the “tucked away” concept really comes to life; everything has a place, and the room can quickly return to a non-office feel with minimal effort.
Cashmere with Lorenzo Oak – A New Popular Choice
The finished look is a standout feature of this project. DAY & KNIGHT specified a lovely combination of Cashmere and Lorenzo Oak. The Cashmere tone brings softness and warmth, while the beige grey Lorenzo Oak adds subtle grain and depth, helping the unit feel like a considered piece of fitted furniture rather than a standard desk and cupboard arrangement.
Together, the colour palette and wooden tones complement the home’s décor beautifully. The modern Shaker styling (crisp edges, balanced proportions and understated detailing) keeps everything feeling current, while still timeless enough to suit the space for years to come.
Integrated LED Lighting: Subtle Impact, Practical Benefits
To elevate both function and atmosphere, integrated LED lighting was included within the storage and display area. This addition provides practical illumination for finding items and working nearby, but it also enhances the overall presentation of the unit in the room. In the evenings, the gentle light creates a refined focal point without feeling overpowering; adding character while keeping the look clean and composed.
The Premium Finishing Touches
High-end details were essential to achieving the client’s desired finish. The cabinetry was completed with luxury satin nickel Oxford knobs, chosen for their understated elegance and comfortable feel in the hand. Matching desk cable ports were included to support a tidy surface, allowing wires to route neatly and reducing visual clutter.
Premium soft-close hinges complete the experience, ensuring doors close smoothly and quietly. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference day to day; especially in a space designed to feel calm and organised.
The Fitted Furniture Installers
Sam and Theo from DAY & KNIGHT’s fitted furniture installation team completed the works at the client’s property in High Wycombe. Their careful fitting ensured clean lines, accurate alignment and a professional finish throughout. The client was left impressed by DAY & KNIGHT’s friendly, professional service, and the way the installation process was handled with care and respect for the home.
“We have loved working with DAY & KNIGHT. A professional and friendly service, and so happy with the end result. We wouldn’t think twice about working with them again. Highly recommend!”
The Result: A Flexible Bespoke Home Office That Looks Beautiful, Even Off-Duty
The completed L-shaped desk and accompanying fitted storage cupboards deliver exactly what the client wanted: a modern Shaker-style home office that performs brilliantly during working hours, yet can be partially tucked away when not in use. With considered storage for peripherals, a pull-out keyboard shelf, integrated lighting and a smart Cashmere and Lorenzo Oak finish, this High Wycombe project is an excellent example of how bespoke fitted furniture can make everyday living feel simpler, tidier and more stylish.
