More Bedroom Storage Plus A Secret Ensuite Bathroom Entrance

A local client in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire approached DAY & KNIGHT with two clear priorities for their bedroom: they needed significantly more storage, and they wanted a discreet way to access the ensuite bathroom. The challenge was to create a “hidden” entrance that felt intentional and elegant, without introducing the cost and complexity often associated with moving or mechanised furniture.

In many homes, the easiest way to disguise a doorway is to use a Murphy-style mechanism or a pivoting wall. However, those systems typically require heavy-duty hardware, careful structural allowances, and a higher installation budget. Our client wanted the intrigue of a concealed route to the ensuite bathroom, but with the hefty price tag.

The result needed to look like high-end fitted furniture, offer generous everyday storage, and still allow comfortable access to the bathroom; without drawing attention to itself.

The Concept: A Wall-To-Wall Built-in Wardrobe Concealing A Hidden Central Passage

DAY & KNIGHT developed a deceptively simple idea: build a full-width, floor-to-ceiling wardrobe run across one wall, but remove the central section to create a passageway. Rather than attempting to make the wardrobe “move”, the furniture would frame the route to the ensuite, and twin doors would close it off when not in use.

When shut, those doors read as part of the wardrobe façade, matching the surrounding cupboard fronts so the opening becomes visually quiet. When opened, the client has a clear, convenient walkway straight through to the bathroom; creating the “Narnia” effect.

This approach delivered the secret-entrance, without expensive mechanical systems. No heavy hinges, no specialist sliding gear, and no bespoke counterweight mechanisms; just smart design and well-resolved detailing.

Budget-Friendly Ingenuity: A Hidden Door Without Costly Mechanisms

A disguised entrance can quickly become a costly feature if it relies on engineered components. By instead designing the wardrobe as a fixed architectural element with a concealed void, DAY & KNIGHT kept labour efficient and materials purposeful.

The “secret” is achieved through consistency: identical door styling, aligned reveals, and uninterrupted sightlines across the elevation. The twin doors to the passage sit naturally within the layout, so the overall composition looks like a continuous run of built-in wardrobes rather than having cabinetry interrupted by a doorway.

It’s a great example of how good fitted furniture design doesn’t need gimmicks. The impression of a hidden entrance comes from proportion, symmetry and finish; not from expensive hardware.

Floor-To-Ceiling Storage: Every Inch Put To Work

While the hidden passage was the headline feature, storage performance mattered just as much. The wardrobe run was designed to make full use of the available footprint, extending wall-to-wall and right up to the ceiling. This eliminates wasted space above standard-height freestanding units and provides the client with storage that feels built into the fabric of the room.

Crucially, DAY & KNIGHT didn’t treat the central opening as “lost space”. Overhead cupboards were integrated above the passageway, bridging the gap and ensuring the whole elevation remained productive. This also maintains a cohesive visual line across the top of the installation, helping the unit feel complete and intentional.

The final design offers generous compartments for clothes and household items, with the added benefit of keeping the bedroom calm and uncluttered; exactly what built-in wardrobes should do best.

The Contemporary Finishes: Taupe Capri Doors And Satin Brass Details

To keep the room feeling light, DAY & KNIGHT specified flat-design Capri doors finished in a gorgeous Taupe. The colour choice adds warmth without heaviness, helping the space feel open and airy; particularly important in bedrooms where bulky furniture can easily dominate.

For hardware, Satin Brass knurled door knobs were selected to introduce a crisp, modern note. The knurled texture adds tactile interest and looks considered, while the brass tone offers a subtle contrast against the Taupe fronts. Together, the finishes bring a refined contemporary feel, proving that a budget-conscious solution can still look premium.

“I cannot speak highly enough about Day & Knight Bespoke furniture. Charlie, Maria and all the team are absolutely wonderful. Our bedroom fitter Sam with the help of Theo was highly skilled, tidy, punctual and extremely helpful.”

Another Installation In Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire

The installation at this Beaconsfield residence was completed by DAY & KNIGHT’s talented fitted furniture installers, Sam and Theo. Precision matters with this kind of project: the secret entrance only works when door alignment is spot-on, gaps are consistent, and the budget friendly built-in wardrobes run looks seamless from end to end.

With the wardrobes fitted and the twin passage doors blending neatly into the overall design, the client gained exactly what they asked for: substantial, well-organised storage and a discreet route to their ensuite bathroom; delivered at a much lower cost than a mechanism-led alternative.

Another finished project, and another happy DAY & KNIGHT client.
