The Common Misconception

It’s a common misconception that fitted wardrobes and built-in wardrobes are the same thing, when in fact there are some differences. The best analogy is that of the “fingers v thumbs” scenario as used by the TV character Zack Johnson in series 04, episode 17 of the hilarious TV show: The Big Bang Theory. Where Zack surprisingly says “… all thumbs are fingers, but not all fingers are thumbs”.

So, What Are The Differences Between Them?

Our commander and chief, Charlie Hope, explains further. Fitted wardrobes are typically fitted to one, or two walls and sometimes in a corner, or “L” shape. A fitted wardrobe can also be installed floor-to-ceiling, without any wall attachment at all for use as a modern room partition. These look great in an American style loft-space.

Built-in wardrobes typically require a minimum of three walls, such as that of an alcove, or other recess and tend to be fitted edge-to-edge. Like fitted wardrobes, built-in’s can also be installed from the floor to the ceiling. Both types are considered “fitted”.
