Maximising Functional Space in Windsor with Built-in Alcove Wardrobes and Cupboards
Windsor, in Berkshire, is synonymous with opulence and heritage, housing some of the UK’s most prestigious addresses and even a Royal Castle. However, not all projects are this grand in nature, with this project being a more modest example; transforming four wasted alcove spaces in to four practical storage solutions.
A Client’s Vision: Transforming Alcove Spaces
The challenge was laid out by Sam Tattersall, a homeowner in Windsor, who saw potential in the otherwise unused alcove spaces within their home. With a clear “storage vision”, they sought to convert these wasted niches into areas of utility – a cloakroom, an airing cupboard, and two wardrobes. DAY & KNIGHT were brought on board to turn this vision into reality, focusing on maximising space without compromising on style.
Design and Functionality Combined
Each alcove presented an opportunity to create something unique while keeping the client’s requirement for practical storage solutions at the forefront. The design team at DAY & KNIGHT recommended two open “walk-in style” built-in alcove wardrobes, finished in a contemporary light grey that complements the bedroom’s palette.
Each featuring integrated drawer units that were adorned with elegant knurled pull-handles, ensuring that every detail contributed to the overall modern aesthetic. Plus two matching floor-to-ceiling shelving and rail units for the other alcove cupboards.

Understanding that modern lifestyles demand more than just storage, one of the bedroom alcove wardrobes was equipped with a swing-out mirror. This ingenious addition not only serves its functional purpose, but does so with a little flair, easily stowing away to maintain the open look of the wardrobe. This feature, amongst others, exemplifies how DAY & KNIGHT’s designs marry innovation with everyday needs.

Their meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality ensured that each alcove wardrobe was installed with precision, transforming the client’s vision into a tangible reality that exceeded expectations.
We received a recommendation to use DAY & KNIGHT having struggled to find a good wardrobe fitter that would provide clear designs for some fairly odd spaces in our bedrooms.
